This Alco locomotive was introduced to the NSWGR in 1957.

There were 3 different 44 class body variations:

• Mark 1 included locos 4401 to 4460 and had a grill behind the drivers and assistants windows.
• Mark 2 had rear lit number boards and included locos 4461 to 4480
• Mark 3 included locos 4481 to 44100 and differed from Mark 2 behind the drivers and assistants windows

Over the years they appeared in various NSW and privatised liveries including Indian Red, Reverse and Candy
