In 1965 VMFA(AW)-122 Crusaders transitioned to the F-4B and were re-designate VMFA-122. In August 1967 they deployed to Vietnam based at Da Nang AB. Their first sortie was on September 1, 1967 and over the next five months VMFA-122 flew 2,540 sorties and dropping 4,800 tons of ordnance. In February 1968 the squadron flew another 629 combat missions and dropped 1,300 tons ordnance in support the Khe Sahn siege. VMFA-122 left Vietnam September 1968 and returned in 1969. In December 2016, VMFA-122 officially became the Flying Leathernecks.
