QantasLink – Flying Art Series – “Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa”
On 1 March 2024, the first of 29 A220s ordered by Australia’s Qantas from Airbus took off on its first commercial flight, unveiling a very special livery. Balarinji, a leading Australian design agency for Australia’s Indigenous peoples, had designed the extraordinary fuselage designs of all previous aircraft in Qantas’ Flying Art Series, working with First Nations artists and their families. The latest work on QantasLink’s state-of-the-art Airbus A220 continues this special artistic partnership. Born in 1952 in the remote community of Kanpi in South Australia, Maringka Baker began painting to tell the stories of her ancestors relating to travel, women’s ceremonial business, family relationships and traditional land. She is recognised as one of Australia’s most successful artists and is considered a source of inspiration for a new generation of First Nations artists. This livery tells the story of two sisters who cross Australia together, travelling great distances to find their way home.
