As the Luftwaffe faced increasing challenges in WWII, German tanks became more vulnerable to enemy fighters. In response, Germany developed a special set of armored plates that could be mounted atop the turret and over sections of the Panther’s engine deck. These field-mounted steel plates were double-spaced on the turret top to enhance protection against aircraft strafing and shrapnel.
