The basic cargo version was designed to transport a load of 5 tons and a length of 4.3 meters over all terrains and in all weather conditions. When used on the road, the loading weight could be doubled. The M39 series was the U.S. Army’s primary truck during the Vietnam War.

The M51 was a dump truck version used to transport sand, gravel, rubble and other bulk materials. It had a cargo box with a cab protector and a tailgate that could be hinged at the top or bottom.
