The Vought Corsair was one of the most unusual but also most successful Navy aircraft of World War II. Feared by the Japanese opponent, who gave her the nickname Whispering Death, she fought her way through the Pacific sky from 1943 to 1945 and achieved record-breaking successes: 2140 opposing aircraft were destroyed, with 189 losses of her own. The Corsair’s combined firepower consisted of six 12.7 mm Browning MGs. Its characteristic bent wings gave it a high level of recognition to the ground troops, who called it the Sweetheart of Okinawa. The F4U-1A was the first batch with major modifications, top speed 671km/h.
