In the late 1940s the RAAF was planning the replacement of the Australian-built CAC Mustang and DHA Vampire. As an interim measure Gloster Meteors were obtained and they saw service withRAAF 77 Squadron in the Korean War. In 1951 the Australian Comonwealth Aircraft Corporation(CAC) signed a licence to build the Amercian F-86 but with some major changes in the design.
Theinitial engine would be the more powerful Rolls-Royce Avon RA7 engine which required radicalmodifications to the fuselage and an enlarged air intake. The original armaments of 6 x 0.5 inchmachine guns were replaced with 2 x 30mm Aden Cannons. Larger fuel tanks were also added.
In 1958, the last 69 of 112 produced had the new Rolls-Royce Avon 26 engine and designated CA-27Mk 32 Avon Sabres
RAAF Avon Sabre A94-983 was delivered in 1957. Following test flights, it was assigned to No.78Wing at Williamstown and subsequently No.3 Squadron Butterworth Malayasia.
During the period 1958 -1961 the RAAF Sabres participated in the closing stages of the Malayan Emergency, and latercarried out patrol and interception duties during the Indonesian Confrontation. The Sabres alsoprovided air cover for the area during the opening stages of the Vietnam War.In 1971 A94-983 was transferred to the Malaysian Air Force and eventually returned to Australiawhere it was restored and put on public display in March 1981. In 2006 it was transported to TemoraAviation Museum and restored to flying condition with successful post maintenance check flights inJuly 2009.
It has been regularly flown at Air Shows but is currently grounded (9/24) due to legacy
ejection seats no longer being supported by Martin Baker. The RAAF is working on a solution toreturn A94-983 to flying condition. The restored aircraft is painted in RAAF Black DiamondsAerobatic Team colours with the checkered tail and top hat logo of 75Sqn.
